Newsletter and Homework

This week in phonics/ spelling open vowels with one or two syllables  will be taught and practiced.  Examples are produce, siren, later, and beside.  The high frequency words are easy, only, really.  These words are tested on spelling.

In writing the children will begin reading and writing poems.

In reading the children will begin reading nonfiction texts.  They will identify the main topic of texts and paragraphs of lengthy texts.  They will also explain how specific images contribute to and clarify a text.

In language the children will identify and use irregular plural nouns (child-children, man- men).

In science the children will  continue to investigate the topic of recycle, reduce, and reuse.  They will discover how nature recycles (leaves, trees, etc decompose to be used again as soil).  They will be creating reusable bag messages.  these bags will be collected and handed out at Nick's of Calvert on Earth Day.

In math the children will
continue learning place value, add and subtract 2 digit numbers using the hundreds chart and open number line.  They will also make meaning and solve word problems. Please continue to practice basic addition and subtraction facts at home.  They should be fluent in adding and subtracting to 20 (meaning they can complete 20 problems in 5 - 8 minutes with 75% of the problems being correct).

In social studies the children will  learn about America and its  past heroes.

Please encourage your child to read each evening for 15 minutes.  You can read to them, they can read to themselves, or another person.

If you have a computer, please have your child practice their math skills on Dreambox.  They can access this program through symbaloo.com/mix/mrscurran.  Once on this site click on Clever on the right.  Their username is
s
lunchnumber and the password is their 8 digit birthday. Dreambox is located on the homepage.  They should be familiar with this, as we do it in school several times a week. Dreambox is a program that progresses with your child as they are proficient on a topic.
